Woodwork Course Teacher demonstrating the skill of pairing with a chisel.

There are several chiselling techniques taught on the course. This one is called pairing and is a process where the chisel is used to remove fine shavings of wood to bring a surface to the exact dimension required.

Here a marking gauge, which has been set to half the thickness of the side piece, is being used to mark up the depth of the housing joint that will hold the shelf of the display box.

A marking gauge is a good example of where holding a woodworking tool correctly makes it so much easier to use effectively.
